How to Discern Before Attending a Christian Event
A Christian event can be a beautiful opportunity to grow in your faith, connect with other believers, and encounter God together. But before you buy the ticket or make plans, have you taken the time to discern whether you should actually be there?

Keep Your Eyes on Christ
Christian concerts, conferences, worship nights, festivals, and gatherings can be powerful experiences. They can encourage us, challenge us, and help us grow.
But our faith should never depend on an atmosphere, an artist, a speaker, or a powerful moment.
Our ultimate guide is Christ, through Scripture, prayer, and the leading of the Holy Spirit.
The Bereans in Acts 17:11 were commended because they listened carefully and then examined the Scriptures to see whether what they were being taught was true.
Don't just ask, “Is this Christian?” Ask, “Does this point me to Christ?”
Discernment Doesn't Mean Suspicion
Discernment isn't about assuming that something is wrong with every Christian event.
It's about taking the time to understand what you're choosing to participate in.
Before attending, you can ask:
- Who is organizing the event?
- What do they believe and teach?
- Who are the speakers or artists?
- What is the vision behind the event?
- What is being emphasized?
- What kind of fruit is being produced?
Jesus said, “You will recognize them by their fruit.” — Matthew 7:16
A Christian label alone isn't enough. And popularity isn't proof either.
Why Do You Want to Go?
Sometimes the most important question isn't about the event itself. It's about why you want to attend.
Are you going because:
- Everyone is talking about it?
- Your favorite artist is performing?
- Your friends are going?
- You're afraid of missing out?
- Or because you genuinely believe it could help you grow in your walk with God?
Take a moment to pray:
“Lord, do You want me to be there?”
Discernment begins in prayer, not at the ticket counter.
A Good Event May Still Not Be for You
An event can be biblical, well-organized, and a blessing to many people, while still not being the right event for you at this particular moment.
Sometimes the question isn't:
“Is this a good event?”
but rather:
“Is this what God is inviting me into right now?”
There is a time and season for everything. — Ecclesiastes 3:1
You don't have to attend everything simply because it's Christian.
So, How Should You Choose?
Before attending a Christian event:
1. Do your research.
Learn about the organizers, speakers, artists, and vision behind the event.
2. Pay attention to the message.
What is being taught? What is being emphasized?
3. Examine your motives.
Are you following God or simply following the crowd?
4. Pray about it.
Ask God for wisdom and discernment.
5. Keep Christ at the center.
The goal isn't simply to attend a Christian event. The goal is to grow closer to Christ.
At M.E.C., we want to help you discover Christian events and connect with what is happening across the Christian community. But discovering an event is only the beginning.
Before asking:
“What Christian event should I attend?”
take a moment to ask:
“Lord, what are You doing in my life right now, and where are You leading me?”
“My sheep hear my voice.” — John 10:27
